It happens while he’s having a long-overdue visit with Ginny. After a night of good food and alcohol and catching up, she digs her fingers right into the bruise that is his loneliness.

“So, seeing anyone?”

The short answer is no. The long answer is, frankly, depressing. 

It’s a no, but not for lack of recent effort. He retired from professional football nearly five years ago, and he hasn’t had any luck finding a partner despite going on several dates. He’s tried to meet people; his friends keep subtly (and then not-at-all subtly) pushing him in the direction of single acquaintances or friends-of-friends, but he’s been out of the game long enough that it all feels foreign to him. He hasn’t felt a spark or connection with anyone. And if one more person mentions Tinder or Grindr to him, he might stuff his phone down their throat.

Hell, his last real relationship was… Ginny. Christ, that was almost twenty years ago. No wonder his friends think he needs to be set up. But after he and Gin broke up, he was so focused on playing better, keeping his team in the Premier League, or playing in Euro Cups or World Cups. The long hours spent training and playing and travelling didn’t exactly allow for much time to meet people or date, and a lot of the people he’d meet through club events or at the bars and parties his teammates frequented weren’t exactly looking for a committed relationship. From a couple disastrous attempts, he's well aware he doesn’t do well with one-night stands.

By the time his retirement loomed, he was more excited to spend time with his friends and family – to watch his honorary nieces and nephews grow up. He’d done his best to maintain those relationships when he could, and now he’s going to enjoy the results of that effort. 

But he’s always wanted a partner – a love like he’d heard his parents had. He’s sure there’s someone out there for him; he just wishes they’d stop hiding.

“I’m going to take that as a no,” Ginny says after an embarrassingly long pause. “Oh no, don’t get all mopey on me–”

“I’m not mopey,” Harry grumbles into his beer. Ginny gives him a look. “I’m not! I just. Maybe I’m a bit frustrated. Trying to find someone is exhausting. And demoralising.”

“If you can’t find someone, what chance do mere mortals have?” she teases.

“Oh, ha ha,” he snarks. “I know you’re taking the piss, but… I think that might actually be part of the problem? Most of them want Harry Potter, but I’m just Harry. Once you take away the sports stuff, I’m really quite boring.”

“Harry.”

“What?”

“You are not, and could never be, boring. You, my friend, are a chaos magnet. Even now that you’re not one of the highest paid football players, or on the cover of Sports Illustrated, or modelling underwear, or whatever ridiculous thing, you are plenty interesting on your own.”

“Gin,” he says, feeling a bit choked up.

“There, there.” She pats his hand before leaning back in her chair, lost in thought. “So, dating isn’t working…”

“To put it lightly.”

Ginny gives him a considering look. “Have you ever thought of finding a sugar baby?”

“A wh–” He chokes on his spit and coughs. “Sugar baby?! I’m not some creepy old letch, Gin!”

She waves off his pearl-clutching. “No, but you are rich and desperate.”

“Oi!”

“Oh, hush. Why not give it a shot? One of my rugby mates used this matchmaking service and had great luck.”

“I’m not paying someone to have sex with me,” he says flatly.

“Then don’t. Pay someone to keep your lonely arse company.”

He sighs, running a hand through his unruly hair and wincing when it snags on a knot. “That just seems so pathetic…”

“Harry,” Ginny says, looking him in the eye. “You have money you don’t need, and want someone to care about. There are many people out there who would love to have that money and someone to care about them.”

And that’s a little more enticing.

“But, since I know you, I will add: Do not try to be a hero. It should be mutually beneficial,” she stresses sternly.

“You say that like I’m going to do this, but I haven’t agreed–”

“We’re going to create a profile right now.”

“Ginnyyyyyyy,” he groans. “Noooooo–”

“None of that,” she says, grabbing his laptop. “You need to build up some relationship confidence, and since the old-fashioned way isn’t working, you’re going to give this a shot.”

He finishes his drink and goes to flop on the sofa in protest.

After a fair bit of typing, Ginny calls from across the room, “Ay, Harry – birds or blokes?”

He lifts his face from where it’s wedged into a pillow enough to shout back a bleary “Both!”

Foggy memories flicker in and out of them shouting questions and answers back and forth, with Ginny eventually migrating to the sofa and asking him to look at photos.

The next morning, Harry wakes up with a nasty hangover and a message on the sugar baby matchmaking app saying he has a date that weekend.

Hey guys! So a headcanon idea for the future of the SCU (does anyone else call it the Sonic Cinematic Universe? idk lol) that I find adorable is Protective Dad Tom and Matchmaker Maddie UwU

Picture it: at first, Sonic thinks that Amy is pretty but thinks of her mainly as another pal like Tails or Knuckles. But then he starts to develop feelings for her and is a bit shy about it since he’s never had a crush before.

Meanwhile, Amy finds Sonic kinda adorkable but pretty immature. But then as the plot progresses she realizes that he’s actually an excellent leader and will do anything for his team and the people he loves, and what she thought was immaturity is actually an unbreakable spirit and relentless positivity. She starts to admire him, and it turns into a crush.

As all this unfolds, we get to see a new side of Tom: the Protective Dad Tom. He sees Amy and Sonic flirt a bit (we’d kinda get second-hand embarrassment because they are to adorable dorks in love, I picture it similar to Adrienette from MLB kinda) and immediately gets very protective of Sonic. Meanwhile Maddie, Knuckles and Tails are all immediate shippers and try to encourage them on.

Idk, I thought this dynamic sounded adorable. What do you guys think? Byeeeee!

Felt like sharing another Icemav snip, so here's some Ice and Goose having a chat!

“Mitchell’s not the brightest is he? Continuously hitting on a civilian instructor like that?” Ice mentioned, keeping his voice as casual as possible. Of course Charlie wasn’t exactly doing anything to dissuade his advances but, well, it really didn’t seem like the smartest move. Goose dropped his head against the wall and groaned, “He’s thinking with his dick, and it might be partially my fault.” “How’s that?” Ice frowned at his friend. “Well,” Goose began, rubbing his face with his hands, “I may have bet him twenty bucks that he had to have, uh, intimate knowledge of a woman at the club our first night here. And he chose Charlie as the target and then she kind of reciprocated and now,” he made a gesture with his hands, “we have this." There was a brief pause. "You know,” Goose continued, glancing at him from the corner of his eye. “maybe I should blame part of it on you.” Ice snorted with disbelief, ���Are you delusional, Nick?” Goose clearly had to be; how in the world was Mitchell trying to get into Blackwood's pants supposed to be his fault? “No, I am not," Goose said firmly. "Mav didn’t show any interest in her until after a certain tall blond acted condescending, accused him of being an asshole and abandoning his wingman, and then walked away. That tall blond being you, Tom. The next thing I know is Mav zeroed in on Charlie like a heat-seeking missile.” “And now it’s my fault??” “Partially your fault, absolutely, yes. So step up your game, Kazansky, and help me distract him from our instructor, for both our sakes.”

Tom: You knew this was going to happen, didn’t you?

Lyra Burke (a witch with the sight): I had an inkling.

Tom: And you didn’t say anything—Why?

Lyra: Because prophecies are self-fulfilling, Tom. And because you never asked until now.

Tom: Well, now I’m asking Burke. Who is Evans? What have you seen?

Lyra: It should be obvious. He’s your match, Tom. In everything that you are, he matches you move for move, spell for spell, wand for wand—It’s romantic, isn’t it?

Tom: It is not!

Lyra: Now don’t lie—I’ve caught you staring at his arse. You want him.

Tom: I do, but carnally. It has nothing to do with romance.

Lyra: …well, I still think it’s romantic. He’s good for you. He keeps you on your toes and I’m all for it. Things were getting a bit dull around here.

Tom: This isn’t one of those trashy romance novels you read. Keep those sort of girlish notions to yourself, Burke.

Prompt:

Harry is a professional matchmaker with a 100% success rate, and Tom needs a suitable spouse to aid his political aspirations.

The problem for Tom is that Harry refuses to simply pair him with the appropriate piece of eye candy, wanting to properly match his client with his perfect partner at every level - emotional, intellectual, political, physical, sexual, etc. (A perfect match not necessarily implying identical opinions and view, however.)

The problem for Harry is that Tom is unrepentantly incompatible with everyone. He fakes most of his personality with others, or treats them with such condescension and/or hostility as to drive them away. It’s only Harry he reluctantly allows himself to open himself up to (because Harry gives him no choice and drives him to real frustration responses), and Harry isn’t sure he wants Tom to meet someone else regardless. Harry’s too much of a professional to act outside of their matchmaker/client relationship though.

Luckily, Tom isn’t.

My absolute favorite thing about this is that there's a blink and you'll miss it interaction in one of the first chapters where Nan prescribes "Miss West" as a cure for Tom's affections for her, and Tom is just like, "Yeah, I have been escorting her to stuff just like you asked, but it's not going to work."

Dora's full name is Dora West. Nan knew the whole time that Dora and Tom were perfect for each other, and she's put together this complicated scheme to make sure they get together in order to get Tom out of her hair. It's such a classic case of Alcott's sense of humor, and it really only hits you on a reread.

Little Women saga - Parallelisms (Part 2): Jo-Laurie-Amy & Nan-Tom-Dora

A while ago (like months ago, sorry) I talked about how similar Jo-Laurie and Nan-Tom relationships are. I do not believe that neither Laurie nor Tom actually loved those women. And both Jo and Nan have very maternal feelings towards these men. They were fixations. Really, they were very damaging obsessions that were ruining these men’s lives. And the women, to their misfortune, had to deal with them. Plus, they both had more maternal feelings than anything else towards those men.

I made 2 posts about it (Chapter 41, Chapter 41: Laurie). It is one of my favorite chapters in the whole saga. And you can see that Laurie’s head is a mess. It’s actually very frustrating to see him going back and forth between accepting that he doesn’t love Jo and admitting his feelings for Amy. When you think he finally got it, he goes back to Jo. But in the process, it’s pretty clear he does NOT love Jo or that he ever did. Why? Well, if he really loved her as much as he claimed, then why did he fight so hard to remember her? And why did Amy get in his mind without even trying?

Louisa describes the moments when Laurie/Tom get over Jo and Nan in a pretty similar way.

The moment Laurie gets away from Jo, those feelings start to disappear. Sure, he spent months wailing and feeling sorry for himself, but that was an act. Once he starts working on his opera, he realizes Jo is no the heroine he once thought. He even claims,

That girl is a torment!

At the same time, he begins dreaming of another heroine that casually looks a lot like Amy and that is surrounded by things he experienced with her in Nice. The only reason why he kept forcing himself to think of Jo was because he thought it would be betrayal to forget her. 

But alas he lets her go:

Laurie thought that the task of forgetting his love for Jo would absorb all his powers for years, but to his great surprise he discovered it grew easier every day. He refused to believe it at first, got angry with himself, and couldn’t understand it, but these hearts of ours are curious and contrary things, and time and nature work their will in spite of us. Laurie’s heart wouldn’t ache.

Fastforward 25 years and Tom is going through basically the same.

Tom and Demi go away. At first Tom is still fixated on Nan and even tries to make her jealous through Dora. However, his plan backfires because he ended up enjoying Dora’s company quite a bit. She turned out to be a lovely girl who made him very happy.

LMA even describes Tom’s change in quite a similar way,

surprised to find that his heart did not ache a bit.

And just like Laurie, Tom is so excited to tell Jo he’s engaged. He’s delighted, that boy is on a cloud! (I’m imagining Jo listening to Tom and thinking “I’ve been here before”)

I spoke about Laurie’s proposals before. It’s so different how chaotic Laurie is with Jo. Meanwhile, his relationship with Amy runs smoothly. It brings him such peace. And the same thing happens with Tom,

‘I declare, I feel as if a weight was off me…

Can you imagine? After all those years of chasing the wrong girl, the stress, the anxiety. Then finally, they are truly in love and those girls love them back! That must feel amazing!

Jo offers her opinion (she does know a thing or two about a boy’s fancy):

It is my opinion, Tom, that you love Dora, or are on the way to it; for in all these years I’ve never seen you look or speak about Nan as you do about Dora. Opposition has made you obstinately cling to her till accident has shown you a more attractive girl. Now, I think you had better take the old love for a friend, the new one for a sweetheart, and in due time, if the sentiment is genuine, marry her.’

Here’s the thing about these fancies, it’s not only about the girl they want to marry. It is about their entire life. Tom was throwing away his future just to be near Nan. He hated medicine. Once he gets over Nan, he goes into business and loves it. This is how important it is to choose your partner wisely, because they can lift you up or drown you.

Tom is basically Laurie 2.0 in this regard. They are so similar that Laurie gives him advice later on.

and Mr Laurie gave him some wise advice upon the astonishing gymnastic feats the human heart can perform, and be all the better for it if it only held fast to the balancing-pole of truth and common sense.

(I want to write a one-shot of this conversation)

Time for Snippet Sunday! Have another Matchmaker Goose AU amuse-bouche from yours truly.

Slider set a cereal bowl on the table and slid into the chair across from him. Ice blinked, watching him pour copious amounts of milk into said bowl. Why the hell was he in his kitchen at 6 a.m.? He had his own place with his own goddamn kitchen and own food, which was right next door! “Dude, again?” Ice said tiredly, voice still rough with sleep. “Would you stop using up all my milk? Go to the goddamn store, Kerner, and buy your own.” “Your fridge is closer than the store. You’re out of eggs, by the way.” “Fuck you, too.” It was too early for this shit. He stood up to get some coffee now that the machine had finally stopped dripping. “Do you think Goose is right?” Ice asked, the conversation with Goose still running through his mind. It didn’t happen often that he felt the need for another opinion but, well. Sometimes even he wanted feedback. Slider hummed around a mouthful of cereal, “About what?” Ice made a vague gesture. “Mitchell, Cougar, I don’t know, Sli. God, chew with your goddamn mouth closed.” “Maybe,” Slider began slowly, after loudly slurping down some milk, the asshole, “it wouldn’t hurt to hear Cougar’s side of the story. And concerning Mitchell, well, I don’t know what Goose told you.”

the possible future of the hatchetfield series: hatchetfield halloween party livestream full rundown

again apologies if someone has already done something like this, but I’m procrastinating doing my coursework and just want to talk about hatchetfield I want everyone to be aware of this exciting stuff that was announced in the stream so here you go:

the next starkid musical to be released will not be in the hatchetfield universe.

the guy who didn’t like musicals will soon be ready to license.

nightmare time 3 was originally planned to be released in the same year as nightmare time 2 and will wrap up the overarching nightmare time stories (which seem to be miss holloway and the foster sisters respectively).

if they did a fourth hatchetfield musical, it would be about miss holloway and her backstory. it is already written. I am very very extremely normal about this fact 😃

there is a possibility of a hatchetfield movie, and workin’ boys was sort of a test for this concept. it would be a slasher murder mystery centering around the hatchetfield community players (zoey chambers and the cast of workin’ girls, possibly also with ruth, hidgens, alice and any other theatre-oriented characters but that part’s just my speculation). the transcription of the teaser description can be found below the nmt descriptions.

She’s engaged to her high school sweetheart, Tom Houston, and the two have a surprise baby on the way! But, as the couple prepare for the arrival of baby Marie, a shadow from Becky’s past returns to haunt them.

Story #4: Devil’s Night

It’s Halloween in Hatchetfield once again, and Miss Holloway is celebrating the same way she’s done for decades, staving off the horrors that go bump in the night. But when Duke gives her an invitation to his wedding, the dejected Miss Holloway begins to chafe under the terms of a contract forged many years ago. She strikes a new bargain, but unfortunately her creditors are known for their tricks, not treats.
